South Korea Travel: 13 Tips for Incheon & Surroundings

Ganghwa Island: a powerful blend of history and natural beauty

Ganghwa Island, located in Korea, is a fascinating destination with a rich historical legacy and breathtaking scenery. As the fourth largest island in the country, it boasts a population of 69,000 residents who proudly call it home. Spanning across the Han River, Ganghwa is separated from Gimpo on the mainland to the east and Gaeseong in North Korea to the north. The proximity to the communist state under Kim Jong-un can create a sense of unease, as you realize that just a few meters away lies a completely different world. This stark reality serves as a reminder of the isolation faced by around 10 million families in North and South Korea, who are still separated and unable to connect with their loved ones.

With a visit to Ganghwa Island, you will not only discover its historical significance but also be captivated by its natural beauty. Marvel at ancient temples, explore fortresses, and take in breathtaking coastal views. Immerse yourself in the island's culture and traditions as you interact with the friendly locals and savor delicious local cuisine.

Standing here, notably at the deliberately positioned Ganghwa Peace Observatory, the reality of North Korea's proximity becomes strikingly tangible.

Despite its charm, Ganghwa Island (also commonly referred to as Ganghwado) has escaped the radar of international travelers. This might be in part due to the low English proficiency in the area, making a translator a handy companion. On the contrary, it's a popular escape for Seoul's locals who yearn for the embrace of nature's fresh air, vigorous mountain excursions, or tranquil beach getaways. Additionally, Ganghwado's historical relevance and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site also draw a crowd. The island bears the scars and honor of Korea's defence against invasions by Japan, Russia, France, and the USA.

Temples, war history and an atypical Catholic church

What is there to see on the island, you ask? My highlight is definitely the Buddhist Jeondeungsa Temple, which you reach via a small road after a good 10-minute walk. It is beautifully located in the midst of lush nature. The chants and drum beats of praying monks can be heard from various temples and there is an almost mystical magic in the air.

I love such inspiring places and would love to spend hours here!

Buddhism, by the way, is the main religion in Korea and influenced by Chinese Buddhism. Entrance to the temple costs 4,000 won (3 euros) per person, and what I find particularly exciting is that you can book a temple stay here, which allows you to spend two days and one night in this colourful place of worship.

When exploring Incheon, be sure to visit Gwangseongbo Fortress. This historical site holds significant importance as it was the site of a major battle between Korean and American forces. The fortress is now accompanied by a gravesite and a monument that pay tribute to the brave Korean soldiers and generals who lost their lives in the conflict. Take a leisurely stroll along the beautiful paths surrounding the fortress, and you might just be treated to a captivating concert by the vibrant crickets that inhabit the area.

Another noteworthy attraction in Incheon is the Ganghwa Catholic Church, a true hidden gem dating back to the 19th century. This charming church is the oldest Anglican church in Korea, where regular Sunday services are still held. Despite its traditional Korean architectural style, stepping inside will transport you to a western-inspired basilica. It's a fascinating blend of cultures and architectural influences.

South Korea Travel: Experience Traditional Crafts

Besides ginseng and clean air, Ganghwa Island is known for two things: Hwamunseok (reed mats) and Sochang (cotton cloth). At the Hwamunseok Cultural Centre, which is located very close to the North Korean border, you will learn all about the special weaving technique that dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty (918 - 1392). After the tour, you can try your hand at weaving a small mat under the guidance of the skilled women who work here. The entrance fee is 1,000 won (not even one euro). However, the course is usually only available for groups of 10 or more.

Open daily from 9 am - 6 pm

The Sochang Experience Centre is dedicated to the history of Ganghwa's textile industry. Cotton and silk fabrics were already produced on the island 400 years ago. In a separate room, an old, original loom is used to demonstrate how the fine Sochang fabric is made. Afterwards, you have the opportunity to print your own Sochang handkerchief with various stamp motifs free of charge.

Incheon: Exploring the Health Benefits of Ginseng

Before leaving Incheon, a visit to the Gingsa Market is a must. This market offers a wide range of health-promoting ginseng products, including variants like ginseng wine. Due to the island's minimal air pollution, it cultivates an abundance of nutritious fruits, vegetables, and, most notably, ginseng. These sensitive plants are meticulously protected in fields covered with shelters. The harvesting process for this esteemed root only takes place after a patient six-year period.

If you seek accommodations with a more intimate and cozy atmosphere, Ganghwa Island offers guesthouses and pensions instead of large hotels. However, one might be interested in exploring other nearby accommodations as well due to the centric nature of Ganghwa Island. A useful resource for this can be found at seoulhotelspage.com. This platform provides an extensive list of hotels near Chun-Young-Kim's House. Amazing homes that offer a unique and inviting ambiance for travelers looking to enjoy the rich culture and breathtaking views around the city. During my stay in Incheon, I opted for the Holiday Inn in Songdo. From there, I relished the breathtaking views of the city's impressive skyscrapers while savoring a delectable breakfast.

My café tip for Ganghwa Island

A really cool, alternative café that you would rather expect to find in New York, London or Berlin is Joyangbangjik Vintage Café. Located in an old textile factory, this wild and colourful mix of café, art gallery and antique shop is sure to delight you. A rusty school bus at the entrance, old sewing machines on the tables, nostalgic posters from the 50s and 60s and a large portion of industrial flair - you can't help but be amazed and take photos at this place. Definitely try the matcha latte with espresso shot! And tell me, have you ever seen such a freaky toilet?!

Must-Try Restaurant on Ganghwa Island

If you're visiting Ganghwa Island near Incheon, make sure to check out this hidden gem of a restaurant, known for its delicious Korean dumplings. Tucked away between the fortress and the church, you'll spot it just before Gobigogae-ro crosses Gukhwa-gil. Although it may have a Korean name only, don't let that deter you from experiencing the mouthwatering flavors and cozy ambiance that await you inside.

Our knowledgeable guide highly recommends their mandu, and I can personally vouch for its excellence. The restaurant's dumplings are a delight to savor, making it a must-visit culinary destination on Ganghwa Island. So, be sure to indulge in this local delicacy and embrace the warm, inviting atmosphere that this charming establishment offers.

Embarking on a South Korean Adventure: Discovering the Marvels of Paradise City

If you're planning a visit to South Korea and have a deep appreciation for art, Paradise City Resort is a destination you shouldn't miss. This exceptional establishment, inaugurated in 2017, has earned the title of being the finest hotel in the country. Its strategic location near the Incheon Airport makes it an even more exciting highlight of any trip.

To thoroughly admire and fully immerse in the wide array of exhibits, allocating two days would be advisable given the expansive nature of the complex.

Do not let the notion of being a non-guest deter you from sampling the resort's extensive art and entertainment offerings. Access to the art exhibits, boasting around 3,000 pieces, comes at no cost. Among the overwhelming assortment of captivating works, you'll find the enormous pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama and Damien Hirst's Golden Legend Unicorn. The golden eye, however, is a piece that remains truly distinctive and my personal favorite.

"The Plaza" offers a variety of experiences, including duty-free shopping and a captivating art museum. Notably, the Wonderbox presents an exciting funfair while the Cimer entices visitors with its traditional Korean Jjimjilbang Spa. Unfortunately, our plans were altered by the typhoon, and we were unable to visit the Cimer due to the temporary closure of the Songdo bridge connecting it to the mainland.

For an extraordinary South Korea travel experience, I highly recommend exploring the Paradise City Hotel. With its engaging facilities and intriguing offerings, it is a destination worth adding to your itinerary.

Experience Songdo Island's Stunning Skyscrapers from the G-Tower

Immerse yourself in the vibrant hub of international business at Songdo Island, where towering structures redefine the cityscape. These skyscrapers, unlike any other, boast unique shapes, ranging from elegant curves to bold pyramid designs. Ascend to the Observatory Deck of the G-Tower, the soaring emblem of Songdo, to witness the awe-inspiring heights that these buildings reach. With its distinctive architecture, the G-Tower stands as a prominent landmark visible from afar.

Take advantage of this remarkable opportunity without an entrance fee, and relish in the breathtaking panoramic vistas that await you. The G-Tower allows visitors to access the Observatory Deck from 10 am to 6 pm, where you can bask in the stunning scenery at your leisure.

During my visit, I was fortunate enough to witness a typhoon looming, creating a dramatic and slightly eerie ambiance. Fortunately, the typhoon dissipated gently, resulting in a memorable experience!

Experience the awe-inspiring modern skyscrapers of Incheon's Central Park, as you take a leisurely stroll alongside the picturesque canal. Marvel at the reflections of these towering structures as you find a peaceful spot on one of the park benches.

An insider's tip: while exploring Central Park, make sure to visit the renowned Lotte Mart. This bustling marketplace offers a plethora of Korean souvenirs, such as the unique and sought-after snail slime cosmetics on the ground floor, as well as a variety of delicious traditional foods on the ground floor.

My restaurant tip for Songdo

Next to Central Park, you can enjoy a super tasty bibimbap (rice with vegetables and egg) and the typical Korean bulgogi (fire meat) at Hanyang. The latter is prepared in front of you and served with various salads, vegetables and of course the characteristic kimchi (cabbage). Super tasty, definitely try it - best with soju (rice wine).

Another restaurant where food becomes a real feast is Icheon Cooked Rice. Here, countless bowls filled with delicacies are simply pushed across the table on a wooden platter. Off you go with the snacking!

By the way, in Korea, unlike all other Asian countries, people eat with chopsticks made of cabbage. Definitely something for the experienced, as they are much smoother than bamboo chopsticks!

South Korea Travel: Chinatown & local snacks in Incheon

Incheon's Chinatown has a long history. In 1883, when the port of Incheon opened, the first Chinese settlers settled here. Today, the shops, restaurants and street food stalls are being run by the second or third generation, making it the largest Chinatown in Korea.

If you want to eat Chinese food true to the original, then definitely go here!

You should also go to Sinpo International Market with an ample appetite. This traditional and most important market in Incheon is where locals do their daily shopping. Fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, a wide variety of Korean street food and delicious smells tempt you to sample the abundant offerings.

Get to know the traditional Dancheong style

If you fancy an artistic activity, you can paint a jute bag in traditional Dancheong style at the Incheon Intangible Asset Education Center under the guidance of artist Jung Seong Gil. The colours used for this are used for royal and Buddhist objects, but also for the magnificent decoration of traditional houses. Since 1975, Jung has been painting in this style, which consists of the four basic colours grass green, reddish brown, white and earth yellow, mainly in temples in many places around the world.

My tip: A typical Korean pleasure in the evening is karaoke. At the Luxury 9 Karaoke, for 40,000 won (30 euros) you can warble as many songs as you like in a separate room for an hour until your voice fails you. Disco ball and light show included!
